Calvin and Hobbes :-)

A snippet I really liked from Calvin & Hobbes :)

Calvin: I'm a genius, but I'm a misunderstood genius.
Hobbes: What's misunderstood about you?
Calvin: Nobody thinks I'm a genius.
--- After thought,
Calvin (added by thinkingtubelite): They are probably missing the point. It's the world's loss to miss out on knowing the existence of a species with astronomical acumen... :D

Does all humankind secretly have the same train of thought? Ignorance is Bliss... :-) I'd rather believe I am the sole, unknown, yet to be discovered genius after fictitious Calvin ;) All knowledge is present in raw form of a random string of 0s and 1s up in my digital brain ... yet to be decoded... or probably never :D

Wisdom?

Sometimes when I look back in retrospection, I realize that if I had the wisdom I have today, I would have tuned my life in a different way starting 6 years back, and taken different decisions, so that I could have a better present. But unfortunately, it is supposedly not possible to go back in time. It is this wisdom which all of us call "the lessons of experience".

What actually irks me is not that I did not do the most optimal things in the past, but the fact that I have no idea as to whether the doings of my present are the most optimal for the future... Another truth is, no two individuals tread upon the same path in life, so nobody can give you the exact lessons which you would need. We basically need to use our past knowledge (wisdom) to take the right decision in the present and to estimate the future... but sadly, this Bayesian principle does not work in real life owing to the infinite order non linearities in modeling real life... that's when we start believing in destiny... :)

Why is it that when you truly learn something, it can never be used anymore or it's just too late? If only the movie "The Butterfly Effect" was doable...! If only someone went against the Theory of Relativity and traveled along the negative time axis! As somebody quoted once "Learning from experience is a faculty almost never practiced."

I sometimes wonder if Wisdom or Intelligence is more important.

Resumed सुदर्षण कृया

Hey !

I have taken a holiday from the world of blogdom for a while... partly because of the lack of correlations in my random thoughts, and secondly, due to laziness. This week, after eons, I finally decided to resume my Sudarshan Kriya once a week, since I coincidentally found as a result of random googling that there were Art of Living follow ups Downtown, that too in a radius vicinity of my lab home.

My yoga instructor once told me that "1 sudarshan kriya is equivalent to 4 hours of sleeping, and 10 surya-namaskarams is equivalent to 45 minutes of jogging"

It's awesome how 1 hour 10 minutes of rhythmic breathing could cure me of a stomach ache, drowsiness ... and induce sufficient fuel for ample productivity for the couple of days... It's truly breathengineering... ! It's one of the most useful things I've learned since 2002... :D

रात्री ... Nocturnal Mysticisms

Different times of the day make us behave and experience a different feel to life. This struck me when I was having a casual conversation with a friend at the date crossover time, aka midnight. I have noticed that as the night progresses, our usual pragmatic and surface talks turn into philosophical discussions.

I have always had a strange fascination for the night, and the wee hours of the morning. It's at this time I usually identify with myself more and see the finer points to my purpose of existence. I think that these are the best times for two people to gel. Even traditionally, sunset and moonlight are supposed to be cliches for romanticisms, bolstering this hypothesis.I have made some of the best connections in my life owing to nocturnal interactions.

As the sun dispels the 'darkness' of the night, we become more practical and worry about the problems of a real life, like daily survival, food, transport, and the like. I am awed at the mysticisms of the night which makes a person suddenly change from the non-dreamer, over practical person to the philosophical, utopia thirsty, thoughtful person...

Also, most of my the 1000+ MATLAB files I might have written towards my Ratatouille happen to be around or closely at the date crossover period ! Incidentally this is blogged at 00:10 too !!

Total Inertia...

" A moving object continues to move uninterrupted unless stopped by an external force, and a stationary object continues to remain stationary forever unless pushed by an external force"

When we're on the top of things ... we are always in control and have grip... and when we're not, we are never and can never be in control...
Also, once we lose control of situations, it takes a long while to get back grip of situations and life...
Once we gain sufficient grip, we are always in track and control of situations, even if we leave the grip / driving force or become lax a while...
The transition time and effort to convert from one ground state to another is high, and cost paid for losing the favorable ground state of having grip over situations in life is hefty...

Seems like the Newton's law of inertia well applies to my real life. Can I switch states in the near future? Do I have sufficient capacity (external force) in me to gear conditions to my favor? I still haven't identified my fuel yet...

I have a good 48 / 60 according to the above metrics which cater to the Expat Indian Herbivorous kid lived in the Middle East :-)

Quarter Life Crises

This excerpt is from a forwarded mail, however I could relate cent percent to it, hence posted it here :-)

It is when you stop going along with the crowd and start realizing that there are many things about yourself that you didn't know and may not like. You start feeling insecure and wonder where you will be in a year or two, but then get scared because you barely know where you are now. You start realizing that people are selfish and that maybe true. Those friends that you thought were so close to you aren't exactly the greatest people you have ever met, and the people you have lost touch with are some of the most important ones. What you don't recognize is that they are realizing that too, and aren't really cold, catty, mean,or insincere but that they are as confused as you are. You look at your job...and it is not even close to what you thought you would be doing. Or maybe you are looking for a job and realize that you are going to have to start at the bottom and that really scares you. Your opinions have gotten stronger. You see what others are doing and find yourself judging more than usual because suddenly you realize that you have certain boundaries in your life and are constantly adding things to your list of what is acceptable and what isn't. One minute, you are insecure and then the next, secure. You laugh and cry with the greatest force of your life. You feel alone and scared and confused.
Suddenly, change is the enemy and you try and cling on to the past with dear life, but soon realize that the past is drifting further and further away, and there is nothing to do but stay where you are or move forward. You get your heart broken easily and wonder how someone you loved could do such damage to you. Or you lie in bed and wonder why you can't meet anyone decent enough that you want to get to know better.Or maybe you love someone but love someone else too and cannot figure out why you are doing this because you know that you aren't a bad person. One night stands and random hookups start to look cheap. Getting wasted and acting like an idiot starts to look pathetic. You go through the same emotions and questions over and over, and talk with your friends about the same topics because you cannot seem to make a decision. You worry about loans, money, and the future and making a life for yourself...and while winning the race would be great, right now you'd just like to be a contender! What you may not realize is that everyone reading this relates to it. We are in our best of times and worst of times, trying as hard as we can to figure this whole thing out.
Life is a roller coaster, u just got to ride it :)

So freaking true !!! especially those I have italicised seem to be resonating with me ...

Stress Signs...

I have tried to note all that I remember currently...

When more than 50 percent of the below happens, I know I have reached a nervous breakdown.

1. Frequent Orkutting: Checking the scrap count every few seconds to see if people remember you
2. Google Talk: Talking to all the people you never spoke to earlier, ranting about the current issue on the surface of your mind, hoping some soul somewhere will empathize with you and provide you an instant solution.
3. Stare at the current piece of code, realize you do not have time to fix it, simultaneously open 10 more windows of code, stare at everything and tear your head apart.
4. Pick up the phone, and remember the undergrad days when you had 10 million friends to call up and talk to, and realize how now things have changed, and how everyone has gone their different ways, and bitterly admit that you are lonely ....
5. Prepare a timetable on how to reach your schedule given the next few days with the assumption that you don't make similar mistakes of indulging in a over convoluted social life during that time period.
6. Call up mom, some old friend back home and hear some familiar encouraging voice.
7. Get the fire of blogging.
8. Treat yourself with a Mocha ... hoping life gets better someday...
9. Scream out aloud
10. Try to fantasize an over productive night even when you know that you cannot stay up more than 1 hr. Be stuck to the lab chair.

I am currently experiencing over 70 percent of the above !! AARRRRGGHH

Dreamland

This blog is inspired by the tulips wallpaper on digitalblasphemy.com, which I set as my desktop background owing to the latent femininity in me which inst visible to all but one fellow mortals.

My dreamland:
Digital blasphemic tulips who talk to me. Grown in heaven: a land of extinct pl_t_n__t_c volcanoes, whos lava was used to grow more of those tulips. Boring humans substituted by interesting tulips. And me in a high rise glass building, in harmony with the virtual nature around me. The high rise buildings signify my hometown, which is a virtual futuristic paradise... they replace countryside for me :) I also do have a predilection for tall creatures...

The above lines will make sense only to those few people directly associated with my life's happenings right now. They can fill in the blanks in pl_t_n__t_c. The rest of you, please ignore this blog :D

Ratatouille

I was watching the movie Ratatouille (disney.go.com/disneypictures/ratatouille/) a couple of weeks ago... and i found a strange analogy to Linguini, Remy and the chef: the bad guy of the movie. The chef is basically a trouble some boss who supposedly is infected by diseases like a big ego, narrow mindedness, and sadistic nature. Remy is a talented rat who is gifted with a dog's nose which smells food and estimates optimal combinations of food contents better or equal in effectiveness to the human tongue. Linguini, a poor garbage boy who wants to be in the cooking team of an elite restaurant develops a protocol of communication with Remy which cannot be decrypted by the remaining humans in the vicinity, hence surprises the head chef by being a pseudo-Remy. Linguini is however traumatized by the bad chef boss... but Remy made his life so much better, and finally the Linguini-Remy combination resulted in Ratatouille !!
The analogy I am trying to draw here is that the bad chef is approximated by the wicked boss in real life who makes you work round the clock, 24 /7. Linguini is the so called poor employee who has to lead a monotonous work life with no hope or avail... suddenly a genie called 'luck' introduces to him, Remy the rat, which controls the poor employee aka Linguini with a joystick :P, and the product is made--- Ratatouille..!!
For my friends, Ratatouille is my so called masters thesis... for the rest of you, its meant to be cryptic...!
Do I have the remaining components in my life? :) Am I yet to meet Remy or do I have it inherent coiled somewhere within the convoluted gray matter up there? (Okay, I am complimenting myself here! :D )
If "Anyone can cook" , can the Remy in me cook up something too within a year from now? :) The bad chef isn't a bad guy by the way !! :D

Independence!

True Independence is characterized by emotional independence and detachment. One who can survive solitary without the requirement of friends and family, and who can strike up conversations with oneself and vacation by oneself can always be stable and happy, as his /her thoughts and mind do not oscillate as a function of the numerous other human parameters encountered. He/she has then reached ground state...

All Knowledge

In your very nature, in the depth of your mind, there is omnipresence, omnipotence, omniscience. All knowledge is already in the depth of your consciousness, of your mind.

I wish...

Bonsoir,

Sometimes have you noticed... you have a train of thought, all correlated and documentable... but suddenly there is this one groove you get caught in; could be an external sound, or a phone bell, or anything... and within nanoseconds all the correlation in the thoughts you gathered with such coincidence and rarity (i wouldn't say difficulty :) )gets jumbled... and you realize that you have to put the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle back again? And if you belong to the catagory of dreamers, like thinkingtubelite, you might misplace the pieces of the puzzle in the non-existent Kingdom of Far Far Away... in which case you start your thought process from the uncorrelated scratch again...

The sentence(s) above contains the reason for which I have been running behind schedule lately... I wish our brains had the auto-save option, and a 'temporary files' folder, where we could look up the cache and re-save the half built correlated jigsaw puzzle, on the occasion of a 'process interruption' caused by the 'external sound, or a phone bell, or anything...'!
'If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride'... ; but I guess, it's all a matter of controlling the infinite sided human mind... maybe I haven't reached there yet !

Thats it for now,
thinkingtubelite :)

DISCLAIMER: thinkingtubelite species has a predilection for convoluted sentences, which 'might' seem jargon to the non-thinkingtubelite reader!

nothing much...

I am approaching the end of another weekend, with lots planned and none done yet. I am hoping the final few hours will be an impulse of productivity, since my productivity bursts usually happen in impulses, ground state being zero :-). This blog is being typed while I sit in front of my computer, waiting for MATLAB simulations to finish running, eating LAYS, and wondering how to optimise my working in such a way so that I finish maximum stuff in minimum time...

The annual "gay parade" for homosexuals and bisexuals in Toronto was on today and yesterday. I could'nt imagine something of this sort happening in my hometown(s). It was interesting to see how different people from different parts of the world are, inspite of all of us being human beings. Imagine if there was life in Jupiter, how different the jupitarians on the different parts of the planet would be, considering it is X times larger than earth.. :D (not sure what value X takes! )

Like I always think, it's fun to sit back and watch the world with a pinch of salt and add every experience and incident we come across in life to our database of interesting stories :)

And it's also good to know that people of that sort have some privilege(s) in some part(s) of the world... refuge for them!!!

Pseudo Euphoria

Anything but the Present:
Man finds comfort in the past or in the future, never looks into the present. It has been an old habit, very old habit, of the human mind. Either it glorifies the past and relishes itself in the memory of past, or it builds castles in dreams, in clouds, for the future.

-- Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Time for thinkingtubelite to resume sudarshan kriya... :)

observations...

I sometimes wonder, whether unproductivity and depression lead to philosphical thoughts...

A human in his euphoric state lives in the real world and leads a normal life, but a human in a depressed state tries to reach his pseudo euphoric state, by coining out philosophies, and analysing life... and convincing himself that there is more to life than the unproductive or bad present (whichever suits the situation). He then thinks about stuff like "the purpose of existence", "what makes one happy", "what defines life", and alot of "is the world really round" useless thoughts; and if he comes into my catagory, might start writing a blog :D

Philosophical thinking then slowly becomes an excuse for procrastination. If only the philosophies we come up with when we are in our life's troughs and periods of unproductivity seem profound and are actually of some use to mankind... we wont be "unproductive" anymore! :D

The funny thing is, all the philosophies we come up with in our troughs are so volatile, that they vanish as soon as we meet our next crest.
(I refer to the ups and downs of life and research as crests and troughs :D )

Okay, enough of "gibberish" for the day... back to work !!!

Using two hands?

Another unproductive weekend passed... with high hopes of achieving the stars, and practical barriers like a needed weekend rest dashing those hopes to the ground...

I sometimes wonder, would ambidexterity improve your intelligence? People say an average person uses less than 10 percent of his / her brain, and a right handed person uses the left side of his brain and vice versa. If we train our kids to be ambidexterous, by making them brush their teeth with both their hands, and write with both their hands, will they use both brain sides? Will it lead to an increase of intelligence quotient?
They say, that one side of the brain is for imaginative and artistic perception, and the other side is for logic. Will ambidexterity lead to a 20 percent usage of the human brain, or just inner conflict? No Idea.

I havent read up much on this... just thoughts which crossed my mind while running MATLAB simulations, when it occurred to me that probably I am not intelligent enough to handle my research and lure my professor at the same time! Next time I doubt my intelligence quotient level, I'll probably practise writing with my left hand :P

I think I should probably experiment these on my kids if I do have any !!! :D

Perfection.... :)

As i promised, this is the first official random post..... :)

i have realised....
that there are no lazy people in this world.
The human mind is like an infinite sided polygon. Unpredictable. Hard to learn. The mind automatically runs a "shortest path algorithm" and an "optimisation" algorithm, whose criteria are more stringent in lazy people: achieve your goals with minimal effort. As one of my friends Melvin put it: "I am not lazy. I just target at achieving infinite efficiency. "

Infinite Efficiency = 100 percent results / 0 input effort.

So this is an explanation to all my acquaintances who classify me as lazy. Thinkingtubelite is an oversophisticated robot who has a futuristic design targeted at achieving infinite efficiency. She is at present in her BETA stage and will hopefully evolve into full form before her anhillation / obsoleteness :) (machines dont "die"!!)
I know infinity is an ideal target, and ideality dosent exist, so by infinite, i am referring to "limit tending to infinity" :D

I am actually aiming at perfection.... I am NOT "lazy" !!! :D

will edit this post, as and when more correlated thoughts cross my mind.... till then,

Adios
thinkingtubelite :)

Sunday, 10 June 2007

Hi !

For a start, this is my first entry into the blogging community of the World Wide Web. I introduce myself as thinkingtubelite, a overwhelmed, overambitious, confused grad student.

The reason and motivation to start this blog, is to to attempt to correlate the random thoughts in my brain, which occur when i spend time procrastinating my research work with no tangible outcome. Now, there is no guarantee that these would make sense to the non-thinkingtubelite reader, nor would be of significance to him or her... nevertheless, once thinkingtubelite decides on doing something, she has to do it... :)

So hopefully, or not hopefully, you should hear more of me soon... since I sense the lack of direction in my research work, and a direct consequence of that is procrastination, which is the seed for random thoughts :) Prediction tells me that my first official (or second) random blog should follow within the next week. (allow for a correction of a few days)

Amicalement,
thinkingtubelite
